Overview

Walk the blood-soaked ground of one of the most intense and symbolic battles of World War II—the Battle of Monte Cassino.

This full-day tour takes you deep into the heart of the Allied struggle to break through the German Gustav Line and reach Rome, visiting the very places where soldiers of many nations fought and fell between January and May 1944.

Led by a specialist battlefield tour guide, this immersive tour combines powerful storytelling, strategic detail, and moments of quiet reflection across the landscapes of the Liri and Rapido valleys, where the war reached its most brutal form.

Highlights of the tour may include:

  • The Gustav Line & German defensive positions
  • Abbey of Monte Cassino
  • Polish War Cemetery
  • Cassino Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery
  • San Angelo in Theodice & the Rapido River crossing
  • Campana della Pace (Bell of Peace)
  • San Pietro Infine

Duration: 8 hours | Private or group tours available | Pickup and Dropoff included | Languages: English, Italian

Highlights
  • The Gustav Line & German defensive positions: Gain insight into the construction and strategic power of the Gustav Line, anchored in the mountains around Cassino and defended by the elite 1st Fallschirmjäger Division and units of the XIV Panzer Corps under General von Senger.
  • Abbey of Monte Cassino: Perched atop a mountain, this ancient Benedictine abbey was bombed in February 1944 and later captured by the 2nd Polish Corps after weeks of brutal combat. Learn about the controversial decision to bomb the abbey and the multinational effort that ultimately took the hill on May 18, 1944.
  • Polish War Cemetery: Visit this solemn memorial site, where many of the Polish soldiers who fell in the final assault are buried. The view from here over the battlefield is both breathtaking and sobering.
  • Cassino War Cemetery: Visit the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, the final resting place of over 4,000 servicemen from the UK, Canada, New Zealand, India, and other Allied nations. Here we honor the fallen and reflect on the cost of freedom.
  • San Angelo in Theodice & the Rapido River crossing: Stand at the site of one of the most tragic moments of the campaign—the failed assault by the 36th “Texas” Division on January 20–22, 1944. Discover how strong German defenses, deep mines, and natural flooding turned the Rapido into a deadly trap.
  • Campana della Pace (Bell of Peace): Located in the valley below, this symbol of reconciliation honors all soldiers—Axis and Allied—who gave their lives in the mountains of Cassino. A fitting place to conclude the day, it reminds us that peace was the ultimate victory.
  • San Pietro Infine: Explore the ghost village destroyed during the U.S. Fifth Army’s advance in December 1943. Here, the U.S. 36th Infantry Division battled the German 15th Panzergrenadier Division in a fierce confrontation, leaving the town in ruins that remain today as a national war memorial.
