Overview

Follow in the footsteps of the soldiers who faced one of the most intense and prolonged battles of the Italian Campaign — where bravery, strategy, and sacrifice collided on the shores of Anzio and Nettuno.

On January 22, 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Shingle, a bold amphibious landing behind German lines aimed at breaking the stalemate south of Rome. What followed was a brutal months-long struggle to hold the beachhead under constant artillery fire and counterattacks.

This full-day tour takes you to the very heart of the Anzio and Nettuno landings, exploring the beaches and battlefields where the Allies dug in under fire. Guided by a WWII expert, you’ll uncover the military strategies, personal stories, and human cost of this pivotal operation.

Tour highlights include:

  • The original landing beaches at Anzio and Nettuno
  • The American Sicily–Rome American Cemetery, resting place of over 7,800 U.S. soldiers
  • The Beach Head War Cemetery (not to be confused with the Anzio War Cemetery) is located 5 km north of Anzio town and is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It houses 2,316 soldiers, sailors and airmen of the Second World War from the Commonwealth.
  • The British War Cemetery of Anzio (not be confused with Beach Head Cemetery) is also close to Anzio town. British Anzio War Cemetery contains 1,056 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
  • German defensive positions and bunkers still visible today
  • The site of the Anzio Beach Head War Museum with wartime artifacts and photographs
  • Battlefields of the Alban Hills and the area of Campoleone
  • Stories of the “Anzio Express” German artillery and the difficult conditions endured by troops

Through powerful storytelling and historical insight, you’ll come to understand why Anzio was not just a military operation, but a test of endurance and courage in the fight for Italy’s liberation.
